What is the dexos 2 approval for engine oils?

The engine oil specification dexos 2 is published by General Motors. It therefore also applies to all Opel models, as GM was the parent company for Opel until August 2017. In the second half of 2017, the PSA group took over Opel. However, the vehicles have not yet been converted to new release classes. The change intervals of the dexos 2 standard vary depending on the vehicle type and cannot be generalized. Please refer to the manual of your car. In principle, both petrol and diesel engines (with diesel particulate filter) can be filled with dexos 2 class engine oils from 2011 onwards. An HTHS viscosity ≥ 3.5 mPas is prescribed. The dexos 2 standard is backwards compatible with the GM approvals GM-LL-A-025 and GM-LL-B-025 valid until 2010, meaning that engine oil of the dexos 2 standard can be used in practically all Opel models for which the dexos 1 approval is not explicitly required. Possible viscosity classes for dexos 2 are SAE 0w30, SAE 5w30, SAE 0w40 and SAE 5w40. The dexos 2 release also applies to models of the GM brands Chevrolet, Buick, Vauxhall, Cadillac, Corvette, Hummer, Pontiac, etc.
