Natural gas-fired CHP units

Natural gas is converted into electricity and heat via an internal combustion engine and is used primarily in public facilities, in the municipal sector, but also in industrial plants. Compared to other fossil fuels, natural gas and purified special gases burn more cleanly. Natural gas does not contain acidic components and therefore requires a lower alkaline reserve in the engine oil. Accordingly, manufacturers of gas engines designed for operation with natural gas specify the use of a low-ash engine oil. At the same time, the use of natural gas and purified special gases is associated with high combustion temperatures. The oils used must therefore exhibit high temperature stability.

ADDINOL MG-40 Extra LA gas engine oils and the Eco-Gas-XD range have already proven themselves time and again in applications involving natural gas and purified specialty gases. They are characterised by a low tendency to form deposits and high thermal-oxidative stability. As a result, they withstand the high combustion temperatures of natural gas, ensure a clean engine and provide reliable protection against corrosive and mechanical wear.

Operation of CHP plants using special gases

Many combined heat and power (CHP) plants used to generate electricity and heat are fuelled by special gases such as biogas, mine gas, landfill gas or sewage treatment plant gas. Against the backdrop of global warming and the scarcity of fossil fuels, the utilisation of climate-damaging gases from landfills, mines and sewage treatment plants offers significant advantages.

However, during operation, these gases present challenges due to their individual, fluctuating qualities. They are usually characterised by a high concentration of strong acid-forming compounds such as chlorine or sulphur compounds. To ensure reliable lubrication at the highest level, the gas engine oil used must reliably neutralise the acids produced. If it fails to do so, this can lead to a total failure of the entire system.

How often do I need to change the oil in my biogas plant?

Depending on the engine, gas quality and product, the oil can be used for up to 1,000 or 2,000 operating hours. With professional oil monitoring, the change intervals can even be extended.

How can I tell if my oil is still good?

The condition of the oil can only be determined analytically in a laboratory. The test methods provide information on whether the oil still has sufficient alkaline reserve, or whether it contains deposits or wear particles, for example. These parameters reveal signs of accelerated oil ageing and may indicate reduced lubricating performance and the onset of wear. In that case, it is time for an oil change.

What is the difference between biogas and natural gas oils?

Biogas is significantly dirtier than natural gas and contains corrosive acidic compounds. This requires oils with a high alkaline reserve, which can neutralise the acids. Natural gas is cleaner and contains fewer impurities. The oils therefore require a lower alkaline reserve. At the same time, however, natural gas is burned at high temperatures. Consequently, the oils must be highly heat-resistant.
