Container sizes for 10W40 engine oil

Our 10W40 oils are available in different container sizes. Look at the respective product pages to see the available canisters or drums. We have smaller cans with a capacity of 1L, which can be carried in the car if oil has to be refilled on the way. For complete oil changes, we also offer 5L or 20L containers of our 10W40 oils, depending on the vehicle type. For smaller cars or motorcycles 5 litres may be sufficient for a complete oil change. Truck engines and larger cars need more oil in the engine compartment. For this there are correspondingly 20L containers or you combine smaller containers on the desired quantity. Large customers also have the option of filling in small drums or drums. We even offer 1000L containers.

Information about 10W40 engine oil

What does 10W40 mean?

The designation 10W40 stands for the SAE class according to which the engine oil was classified. The SAE class describes the viscosity of an oil, i.e. its flow properties as a function of the operating temperature. Engine oil with class 10W40 is a multigrade oil with good flow properties at cold and warm temperatures. This is necessary in order to lubricate the engine optimally at all necessary points throughout the year. "10W" stands for flowability at cold temperatures (W=winter). It is still pumpable down to -30 °C, i.e. liquid enough to spread in the engine. The second part, "40", describes the flowability of the engine oil at an operating temperature of 100 °C. The viscosity of a 10W40 oil at 100 °C is in the range of 12.5 -16.2 mm²/s.

Performance parameters of SAE 10W40
Performance parameters of SAE class 10W40

Generally, 10W40 oils work best in the temperature range from -30 °C to +40 °C. Your engine is well protected despite large temperature differences between winter and summer in Central Europe. Whether your car or commercial vehicle is approved for 10W40 engine oil can be found in the respective manufacturer's specifications. Only fill your engine with oil that has been approved by the manufacturer, otherwise the lubricating film in the engine cannot be optimally maintained.

10W40: Fully synthetic, semi-synthetic or mineral?

Engine oils with the marking 10W40 consist mostly of semi-synthetic base oils. Fully synthetic base oils are more likely to be used in the 0W40 specification. Mineral oils are used for 15W40. Synthetic oils are obtained artificially by chemical processes such as hydrocracking. They have better lubricating properties than mineral oils and are less prone to sludge formation. Synthetic oils can therefore be used in a wider temperature range and have longer oil change intervals. However, synthetic oils are more expensive than mineral oils. Therefore, semi-synthetic oils are a compromise of improved lubricating properties and price.

10W40 motorcycle oil

ADDINOL offers with the POLE POSITION series excellent engine oils for motorcycles, also in SAE class 10W40. They have been developed and approved for 4-stroke motorcycles of European and Japanese manufacturers. The use of synthetic base oil components in combination with successfully tested additives guarantees high performance. The well-balanced performance of the oils comprehensively protects the engines with all their components and ensures a long service life.

10W40 or 5W40

Engine oils with SAE classes 10W40 and 5W40 differ only in their cold flow behaviour. While 10W40 oils can be pumped down to -30 °C in the engine, 5W40 oils can also withstand operating temperatures down to -35 °C. The difference is therefore small and consists only in the cold start behaviour of the engine oil.

Mixing 10W40 and 5W40?

The engine oils can be mixed with each other. If your vehicle is approved for both viscosity classes, the oils can also be combined in the engine compartment without problems during prolonged operation. If your vehicle only has the approval for one of the two SAE classes, we recommend not to mix the two different oils. Engine damage can occur if the lubrication properties do not correspond to the optimum.
