What does 15W50 mean?

15W50 refers to the SAE class according to which the engine oil was classified. The SAE class describes the viscosity of an oil, i.e. its flow properties depending on the operating temperature. Engine oils of class 15W50 belong to the multi-grade oils. These exhibit good flow characteristics at cold and warm temperatures. "15W" refers to the flowability at cold temperatures (W=winter). The oil is still pumpable down to -25 °C, i.e. liquid enough to distribute in the engine. The number "50" describes the flowability of the engine oil at an operating temperature of 100 °C. The kinematic viscosity of a 15W50 oil at 100 °C is in the range of 16.3 - 21.8 mm²/s.

15W50 or 10W40?

Engine oils with the SAE classes 15W50 and 10W40 differ both in their cold flow behaviour and their kinematic viscosity. While 15W50 oils can be pumped in the engine down to -25 °C, 10W40 oils can also withstand operating temperatures down to -30 °C. The 15W50 oil, on the other hand, has a higher kinematic viscosity than the 10W40 variant. This means that the 15W50 oil is generally more powerful and robust than the 10W40 oil. Which oil is better for your vehicle cannot only be determined by these parameters. First, you should look at the approvals for your vehicle. If both a 15W50 oil and a 10W40 oil are approved for your vehicle, you must test for yourself which oil produces the better performance in your individual case.

The engine oils of the SAE classes 15W50 and 10W40 can also be mixed with each other. If your motorbike is approved for both viscosity classes, there will be no complications. If your motorbike is only approved for one of the two SAE classes, we advise against mixing. Engine damage may occur if the lubricating properties of the mixture do not correspond to the manufacturer's specifications.
