Friction modifier

Friction modifiers are additives that are able to reduce or even prevent friction. They create fur-like films that can separate metal surfaces from each other.

The main purpose of using friction modifiers is to reduce wear in the area of mixed friction i.e., the phenomenon of insufficient lubrication between solid and liquid friction. In this way, frictional vibrations (stick-slip phenomena), which can occur e.g., in guideways, automatic transmissions or motors, are to be contained. The influence of friction modifiers is noticeable, among other things, in low-viscosity engine oils, since the proportion of mixed friction is greater here than in higher-viscosity oils.

Friction modifiers usually consist of fatty acids, fatty acid derivatives, organic amines, amine phosphates or mild EP additives.
