Halal and kosher lubricants

There is not only a growing health awareness among consumers that can be observed but also sticking to religious dietary laws becomes more and more important. After all, globalisation also has an effect on food and beverage industries as the trade relations between different countries are increasing and becoming ever more complex. On the one hand sticking to kosher and halal requirements is important for exports to the respective countries. On the other hand, it is also gaining importance in countries of the EU in canteens, hospitals, restaurants and even supermarkets. Halal and Kosher standards are continuously developing into a new quality feature for food. As these standards combine religiously compliant nutrition with first-class manufacturing practices, they are steadily gaining global economic importance. And producers of foodstuff have to keep in mind that the kosher and halal certifications also cover the lubricants applied in the lines.

Halal certification

The halal certification requires the production of food according to Islamic dietary regulations. Lubricants used for the production of halal products are also subject to these regulations as they may get in contact with the food. For the certification of lubricants for the food processing industry, several factors are crucial to ensure that the products comply with halal regulations.

These factors together ensure that lubricants for the food processing industry comply with Islamic regulations and are therefore suitable for use in Halal-certified production facilities. More than 50 countries have already developed halal standards for industry, trade and consumer protection. Halal certification today not only creates a common basis of trust in the quality of products and production, but also promotes trade relations and increases export opportunities.

Kosher certification

Kosher certification of foodstuffs also requires production that fulfils the requirements of Jewish dietary regulations. Lubricants used in the manufacture of Kosher products are also subject to these regulations as they may come into contact with the food. When certifying lubricants for the food processing industry, several factors are crucial to ensure that the products comply with Kosher regulations.

Special challenge for Research & Development

These restrictions imposed by religious dietary regulations significantly reduce the selection of raw materials available for lubricants required for modern production lines in the food processing industry. From deep-freeze processes to automated baking lines, from fast-running filling systems to slow-running kneading processes, salty and powdery products, the requirements for lubricants are as varied as they are demanding. It is a challenge for a lubricant manufacturer to develop high-performance industrial lubricants with a limited selection of raw materials for such a wide range of applications.

Realisation in practice

The certifications for halal and kosher do not only cover the base oils and additives used in the formulation of the lubricants but also extends to production lines. Only with a separate production line, a separate filling station, and separate equipment exclusively for products for kosher and halal applications can we fulfil the strict requirements.

During mandatory annual training, all employees involved in the entire process of manufacturing lubricants for the food industry, from purchasing raw materials, development, mixing and quality control to sales, are trained in all the religious and regulatory requirements.

So that our customers in the food processing industry can quickly recognise which ADDINOL products they may use without hesitation for production according to halal or kosher regulations, we also display the certification by the respective institutions on our product labels for our FoodProof range.
