BMW Longlife 04 approval for engine oils
The BMW Longlife 04 engine oil specification dates from 2004 and was issued by BMW for diesel vehicles with and without diesel particulate filters. In the EU, Switzerland and Norway, the approval also applies to some petrol engines. The change intervals for engine oils with BMW Longlife 04 approval are variable thanks to the integrated Longlife Service and are based on the service interval display of the vehicle. Approved viscosity classes for BMW Longlife 04 are SAE 0w30, SAE 5w30, SAE 0w40 and SAE 5w40.

What is the difference between BMW Longlife 04 and BMW Longlife 01?
Engine oils with the approval BMW Longlife 04 have a lower content of sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur and therefore burn with fewer pollutants than oils with the approval BMW Longlife 01. They are considered Low SAPS oils. This makes BMW Longlife 04 oils suitable for use in modern diesel vehicles with diesel particulate filters. They are backwards compatible with BMW Longlife 01 engine oils. An engine with BMW Longlife 01 approval can also be filled with Longlife 04 oil. The BMW Longlife 04 release is therefore also regarded as a further development of the Longlife 01 version.
